The History of Mini Golf
Mini golf is a classic family activity that never goes out of style. Nothing feels better than sinking that hole-in-one! But where did this pint-sized version of golf come from? Let’s take a swing at the story behind mini golf!
A Game Born from Golf

Mini golf actually started as a way for people to practice their putting skills. Back in the early 1900s, golfers wanted a smaller space to sharpen their short game without heading out to a full course. Some of the first versions of mini golf popped up in gardens, on rooftops, and even inside offices.

The world's very first miniature golf course, though, was established way back in 1867! The 9-hole course Ladies' Putting Green, also known as The Himalayas, at St. Andrews Links in Scotland is still open today, over 150 years later!

The first known mini golf course in the United States was called “Thistle Dhu” (pronounced “This’ll Do”), built in North Carolina in 1916. It had short greens, fun obstacles, and a simple layout. Sound familiar?
From Practice to Play

As mini golf became more popular, people realized it was just plain fun, even if you weren’t a serious golfer. Designers started adding silly obstacles like loops, ramps, and animal statues to keep things interesting. Slowly but surely, mini golf evolved past more than just putting.

By the 1930s, mini golf had exploded in popularity across the United States. More than 150 rooftop courses existed in New York City alone! It quickly became a favorite activity during the Great Depression because it was affordable entertainment for families.
Mini Golf Around the World

Mini golf isn’t just popular in the United States. In Sweden, it’s called “bangolf,” and some people take it very seriously, even holding championships. Whether you're playing for fun or aiming for a trophy, the spirit of the game stays the same: colorful courses, fun challenges, and big laughs.
Why Kids (and Grown-Ups) Love It

So what makes mini golf such a hit? Mini golf is great for all ages, easy to learn, and a perfect group bonding activity, making it a huge hit around the world. Plus, every course is different, so there’s always something new to explore. You never know when a pirate ship, volcano, or dragon might appear!
