The White House used to be called the President's Palace, President's House, or Executive Mansion. Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th U.S. president, officially named it the White House in 1901.
Teddy Roosevelt was also the first U.S. president to ride in a car while in office. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd U.S. president, was the first to ride in an airplane. Will we ever see the first president in space?
Franklin D. Roosevelt was also the first U.S. president to appear on national television in 1939.
Franklin D. Roosevelt had the longest presidential term of any U.S. president, being in office for a total of 4,422 days! Conversely, William Henry Harrison, the 9th U.S. president, had the shortest presidency at only 31 days.
Martin Van Buren was the 8th U.S. president, but the first to be born as a U.S. citizen. All 7 presidents who came before him were British! Van Buren was also the only president who spoke English as a second language, with Dutch being his first language.
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, was the tallest president to date, standing at a whopping 6 foot 4"! On the other hand, James Madison, the 4th U.S. president, was the shortest, measuring in a whole foot shorter at 5 foot 4".
Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th U.S. president, was the first president to use a telephone in the White House.
Out of 46 total presidents, only 7 have been left-handed! James Garfield, the 20th U.S. president, was the first to be left-handed.
John Tyler, the 10th U.S. president, had 15 children, the most of any president! The White House must have been crazy! James K. Polk, on the other hand, who followed Tyler as the 11th U.S. president, was the only president with no children.
Bill Clinton, the 42nd U.S. president, was in office when the White House's first official website was launched in 1994.
